Costly flirting with Chelsea: Background of Luis' shocking sack

Reading Time: 2min | Wed. 04.03.26. | 14:13

The ex-Blues and Atletico defender was reportedly in talks with the London side about succeeding Enzo Maresca, which eventually cost him his job at Flamengo

Two days ago, the football world was shocked to learn that Flamengo, out of nowhere, sacked their manager, Filipe Luis, even though the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid defender had won both the Brazilian Serie A and the Copa Libertadores (South American equivalent of the Champions League).

However, following the initial shock, the story behind Luis' dismissal has started to come to light.

Namely, the 40-year-old tactician was fired for "flirting" with Chelsea!

According to Brazilian UOL, Luis was in talks with the London side's owners, the BlueCo group, following Enzo Maresca's departure, apparently hoping to become the new boss at Stamford Bridge.

Nevertheless, the company's management saw him as a candidate for the head coach position at the Blues' affiliate club, French Strasbourg, which did not please Luis, and the negotiations fell through.

However, that's not the end of the entire conundrum, as the tactician was at the same time in the middle of discussions with Flamengo regarding his contract extension!

The Brazilian side allegedly hasn't received Luis' feedback for three days during their talks, but the deal was eventually struck on December 29. Still, upon discovering the reason for the delay, Flamengo's management showed no mercy.

In the end, on the one hand, it's normal that a manager with such exceptional results as Luis would be keen on a bigger challenge. Somewhere else, his actions wouldn't be considered a betrayal, but in Brazil, where football is a religion...

Either way, Luis is now unemployed (though probably not for long) and has undoubtedly learned the true meaning of the famous saying, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."
