Clash of shaken giants — Real Madrid and Man City, for who knows how many times

Spanish and French giants meet for the seventh time in seven seasons — five of those in the Champions League
Tonight, all eyes are on the Bernabeu as Real Madrid and Manchester City clash in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 showdown, marking their 16th encounter in the competition.
This two-legged clash has become something of a tradition, one that is slowly eroding the thrill of unpredictability. Since City’s debut in Europe’s elite competition that autumn, this marks their ninth meeting in the last 15 seasons.
If that already sounds intense, a closer look at recent history is even more astonishing: this is their eighth encounter in the past 11 years, and the sheer absurdity peaks when you realise these giants have met seven times in the last seven seasons—six in the knockout stages and a December league-phase clash. The only season in the past seven without this fixture was 2020/21.
For fans of high-quality football, it’s a feast. For those who enjoy clashes of style, culture, and rare away trips, it’s become a Spanish saga with English production. It all began in autumn 2012 with a dramatic group-stage encounter (3–2 for Real at the Bernabeu, 1–1 at the Etihad), continuing through semi-finals, quarter-finals, round-of-16 ties, and even last season’s playoff for the round of 16. Last year, Real triumphed both in Manchester (3–2) and Madrid (3–1) before eventually being eliminated by Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
Memories abound: City’s 4–0 demolition of Real in the 2023 semi-final, Rodrigo’s stoppage-time brace in the 2022 semi-final comeback, the penalty shootout two springs ago that silenced the Etihad. Every scenario has already been played out, every tactical idea already tested in a Real–City duel.
Historically, the head-to-head record is perfectly balanced: of 15 meetings (including the December league match), Real have won five, City five, and five ended in draws. But if you focus strictly on knockout ties, Real have prevailed in four of the six two-legged encounters, City in two.
Real also won the last two spring knockouts in 2024 and 2025. The December clash at the Bernabeu went City’s way but was a league match with less at stake.
Real Madrid, chasing a 16th European crown, reached this round via a tougher path. Finishing ninth in the league phase—one spot behind City—they had to go through a playoff, defeating Benfica and Anatoliy Trubin 3–1 on aggregate.
Alvaro Arbeloa now attempts to steady a squad that trails Barcelona by four points in La Liga with 11 games remaining, despite last Friday’s dramatic victory over Celta, secured by Federico Valverde’s goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, writes history tonight with his 190th Champions League match, equaling Sir Alex Ferguson. City arrive in Madrid unbeaten in nine Premier League games but seven points behind Arsenal (with a game in hand).
The Bernabeu has been a fortress—Real have won 19 of the last 25 Champions League matches at home—but City handed them their only international home defeat this season back in December. In fact, Madrid have lost their last four UEFA encounters against English teams.
City’s away form is inconsistent (just two wins in their last eight European trips), yet this season they have already swept through Spain twice, defeating both Real and Villarreal. While most clubs would struggle under this number of injuries, Arbeloa and Guardiola can still rely on a nuclear squad.
The hosts arrive significantly weakened. Kylian Mbappe remains sidelined with a knee injury since February, dulling Real’s attacking edge. Also absent are Jude Bellingham, whose absence contributed to losses against Osasuna and Getafe, and defensive pillars Eder Militao, Alvaro Carreras, and David Alaba. Still, Real will lean on Bernabeu magic and captain Federico Valverde, who showcased his stamina against Celta.
Arbeloa may need to patch the defense with Tchouameni in central defense, but attack remains potent with Vinicius capable of deciding the game alone. Eduardo Camavinga returns after resolving a dental issue.
Arda Guler could slot into central midfield if not deployed on the right wing. Vinicius Junior, who hasn’t scored in his last six matches against City, has netted 12 of his last 13 Champions League goals in the second half, and is expected to start on the left of a front three, with Gonzalo Garcia or former City player Brahim Diaz potentially leading the line.
As for Manchester City, Josko Gvardiol (tibia fracture), Mateo Kovacic (ankle/heel), and Riqui Luis (ankle) are the only confirmed absentees. Guardiola is likely to field his strongest XI after making 10 changes in last weekend’s FA Cup win over Newcastle.
Erling Haaland, rested in that game, has trained and is expected to lead the attack. The Norwegian has scored 56 goals in 56 Champions League appearances, including 10 goals in his last 10 matches against Spanish clubs, featuring a penalty at the Bernabeu in December.
Mateus Nunes should continue at right-back, tasked with containing Vinicius, alongside Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, and Ryan Ait-Nouri in defense. Rodri, O’Reilly, and captain Bernardo Silva are expected to anchor midfield.
Guardiola faces a selection dilemma in attack alongside Haaland and Antoine Semenyo. Omar Marmoush scored twice against Newcastle, while Savinho also found the net last weekend, competing with Ryan Cherki, Phil Foden, and Jeremy Doku for a starting spot.
