Former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan has shed light on an interesting episode from the previous season when John Stones apparently made an unconventional attempt to grab the captain's role.
During the pre-season in 2022, Manchester City conducted a team vote to select their new skipper, with Stones and Kevin De Bruyne emerging as the main contenders due to their extensive experience within Pep Guardiola's squad.

In an unexpected turn of events, versatile Stones decided to enter the captaincy race and took an unconventional approach to win the support of his teammates. As part of his campaign, according to Gundogan, Stones distributed posters featuring a comical election slogan that humorously read, "John Stones - Man of the People."
Gundogan, reflecting on Stones' unique campaign, remarked:
"John promoted himself, yes, but more for fun. When I was elected captain, I was relatively sure that I would be in the top three. It was about whether it would be Kev [De Bruyne] or me. I think it was relatively close."
Ultimately, Gundogan assumed the role and led Manchester City to victories in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
