Chelsea's new unwanted record in another PSG defeat

Reading Time: 3min | Wed. 18.03.26. | 10:15

The Blues have conceded eight goals in two legs for the first time in their history

Right after the first match, it was clear that the second would be a mere formality—and it proved to be exactly that. Paris Saint-Germain not only finished the job at Stamford Bridge, but also crushed Chelsea F.C. again in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, taking revenge for that slap in the Club World Cup final eight months ago—3:0 (first leg 5:2). At the same time, they sent a strong message to their main rivals—especially FC Bayern Munich and Arsenal F.C.—that they will not give up the European crown easily.

Many believed that PSG was only a pale shadow of last season’s team and would quickly relinquish the throne. Their results supported that view—they reached the knockout stage via the playoffs and even allowed RC Lens to dictate the pace in Ligue 1 for a long time. Simply put, they looked unconvincing. But it seems the reigning European champions fooled everyone. Just like last season, they were timing their form perfectly. First, they overwhelmed a French opponent in the playoffs, then eliminated an English club in the first knockout round. And interestingly, just like last April, another Premier League side could await them in the quarterfinals—if Liverpool F.C. overturns the deficit against Galatasaray S.K.. Whoever stands in their way, PSG will be the favorite after what they’ve shown in these two matches.

And that’s exactly why they weren’t seen as such heavy favorites against Chelsea beforehand—certainly not to win by a six-goal aggregate margin. The tie was expected to be one of the most balanced in the Round of 16, but it turned out that the world champion is currently nowhere near the European one. Despite investing over a billion euros into building the squad, Chelsea ended up setting an unwanted record. The crowd at Stamford Bridge witnessed history—one they will want to forget quickly. For the first time ever, Chelsea conceded eight goals in a Champions League knockout tie, equaling their heaviest elimination defeat, previously inflicted by Bayern back in 2020.

From that tie, fans still remember—and resent—Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry. Now, they may feel the same about Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was the key figure in this clash. Across roughly 100 minutes over both legs, the Georgian scored three goals and provided one assist—deciding the tie almost single-handedly. Chelsea’s problems, however, go deeper—especially in defense. Costly mistakes practically handed PSG several goals in both matches. While Liam Rosenior had serious squad issues—losing both right-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto, as well as goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen—it’s hard to justify such a collapse.

Any hope of a miracle disappeared early. Within 14 minutes, PSG had already scored twice, setting the tone. Kvaratskhelia punished a mistake by debutant Mamadou Sarr, and shortly after, Bradley Barcola capitalized on poor communication between Moises Caicedo and Andrey Santos. The final blow came just after the hour mark, when substitute Senny Mayulu scored a stunning long-range goal. By then, the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge had already turned—boos gave way to empty seats as fans began to leave. Some stayed until the end and even applauded, though the team hardly deserved it. In the final half-hour, the score remained unchanged, partly because Rosenior had already waved the white flag—resting key players like Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Enzo Fernandez ahead of a crucial Premier League clash against Everton F.C., which could be decisive in the race for a Champions League spot.
