Chelsea finally avoid defeat, as packed Anfield sees mild Liverpool

The two Champions League contenders shared spoils in a dynamic clash - 1-1

After six consecutive Premier League defeats, Chelsea have finally survived one game and managed to pick up some points - one, to be precise. What Newcastle, Everton, Manchester City, Manchester United, Brighton, and Nottingham Forest did in the past two months with ease, Liverpool couldn't, failing to beat the struggling Blues - 1-1.

The beginning of the match hinted at the Reds' stellar performance, as Ryan Gravenberch broke the deadlock only six minutes into the game with an exceptional strike from outside the box.

However, instead of finishing the confused rival, Arne Slot's men allowed the visitors to wake up, and they seized the chance to level through Enzo Fernandez, whose free-kick cross luckily hit the post and ended up behind Giorgi Mamardashvili's back in the 35th minute, setting the half-time score.

The second period brought much more fire on the pitch.

Cole Palmer's goal was disallowed for Marc Cucurella's offside just three minutes after the break. Ten minutes later, the same thing happened after Curtis Jones found the net.

In the final 20 minutes, Liverpool were much closer to the winner, as Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk each hit the woodwork, but luck apparently was on the Blues' side today.

The Reds' fourth place is now at risk, given that Aston Villa are breathing down their neck, but their UCL ticket should be safe, though their fans weren't happy at all after today's draw, booing the players on their way to the dressing room. On the other hand, Chelsea's Champions League hope is still alive, but their displays will have to be much better in the remaining two games.
