Kenya will be facing the Southern African nation on Thursday, 7 August at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in what will be the second match for both teams.
Harambee Stars head into the match on the back of a win in their opener against the Leopards of DR Congo on Sunday, 3 August, while Angola suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Morocco on the same day.
Despite the loss, Angola had a good command of the game and enjoyed a lion's share of possession. In his pre-match press conference, McCarthy revealed Kenya's approach to the clash.
“We have watched their match against Morocco and have analysed them. We will prepare the team to counter their strengths and exploit their weaknesses.
We know that they play in a back three, four in midfield and three upfront, which works to their strengths and are good at keeping the ball, but we will use our strength, which is to stay compact and have the ball in dangerous areas,” said McCarthy.
Just like Morocco, Harambee Stars managed to squeeze a win despite their paltry possession, a fact the South African tactician explained.
“We do not have to keep much possession as was the case against DR Congo, but we need to make our best players have the ball in key and dangerous areas that suit us,” he added.
McCarthy also hinted at tactical tweaks ahead of the match, noting that he sets up his team according to the unique requirements of each match.
“We played Manzur (Okwaro), a defender in midfield, to help us handle DRC, who were playing direct long balls to their big attacker (Jephte Kitambala). Manzur is quick, agile and fast and helped us to handle that.
We will have a different scenario with Angola, who prefer to keep possession, and without giving match details, we will prepare our team well for that challenge,” he remarked.
The match will kick off at 1900 hrs- the first time in recent years that Kenya plays on home soil under the floodlights.
