South Africa are out to go back-to-back after clinching their maiden title in 2022

Winners of this year’s CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set for Morocco from Saturday, 5 to 26 July in Morocco will be awarded Ksh1.4 million (USD 1,000,000) with the runner-up walking away with half that.

Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has increased the prize money by 100% and the total purse of the competition by 45%.

President Dr Patrice Motsepe said the federation was continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa.

“The 100% increase should contribute to the increase in the salaries of women football players, coaches, and employees. The quality and standard of women’s football in Africa is consistently improving and is world-class.

We are excited about the substantial increase in the number of fans, broadcasting viewers, and sponsors in the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024. This Competition is going to be enormously successful,” Motsepe offered.

The competition promises to be one of the most spectacular in history. This edition will be the first without a debutant team as each nation present has already participated in a WAFCON, and intends to no longer play extras.

Hosts Atlas Lionesses are dreaming of revenge. In 2022, the Moroccans made history by reaching the final, a first for a North African country. Two years later, Morocco wants to transform the trial.

On their part, Banyana Banyana, who ended an almost two-decade wait for a title by lifting the 2022 title, are out to defend their title under renowned tactician Desiree Ellis.

Meanwhile, shaken up in the group stage in 2022, then eliminated in the semi-finals by Morocco on penalties, Nigeria left the tournament on a bitter note. This edition is, therefore, an opportunity for them to set the record straight. The nine-time champions intend to regain their throne.
