Butere Girls' coach Edwin Sakwa upbeat ahead of FEASSSA games

The school is making return to regional games after nine years in the cold

Newly-crowned national football champions Butere Girls are optimistic of getting positive results in the the East Africa Secondary School games set to for Huye in Rwanda.

Butere, last featured in the regional tournament in 2014 and despite the log absence, the team is already confident of getting good results.

Coach Edwin Sakwa, who lead the Western football girls’ powerhouse to a second national title, sent a stern warning to their opponents.

"We are prepared than before and every team should worry of us as our aim is to bring back the title to Kenya," he offered.

Butere, had a perfect run to the national final as the team didn’t taste defeat since the start of the school games at Zonal levels.

The team defied all manner of odds to eliminate favourites Wiyeta Girls courtesy of Judith Okumu goal to book a slot in the annual regional competition as a country champion which Sakwa attributed to proper planning and training.

"Proper planning and training have been our main secret and we are not going to relent until we bring back the trophy," he said.

Sakwa, further, added that his arsenals have been polishing various aspects of the game to further their chances of outshining their opponents to the coveted title.

"We have been working on our scoring patterns and further improving on spot kicks, because in this competition if you are good in set pieces, then you can easily win matches," added the jovial teacher.

Asked on the threat posed by Ugandan teams, Sakwa was quick to rubbish a suggestion indicating that the neioghbour would her girls a run for their money.

"Uganda are not a threat. In fact, Kenyan teams have dominated the girls’ category," he said.

Butere Girls’ are grouped in Pool A alongside other Kenya representatives Madira Girls, defending champions St. Noa girls of Uganda as well as other Uganda ambassadors Kawempe Muslims,GS Gatizo of Rwanda and Tanzania's Ziba Secondary School.

Butere start their hunt for glory at Stade Kamena on Sunday settling scores against Kawempe Muslims before squiring out with Madira Girls on Monday.

Kenya's Arch Bishop Njenga have won the girls' football trophy a record four times closely followed with Wiyeta Girls who bagged the regional gong three times.

Kwale girls were the last school from Kenya to win the championship in 2018 whereas St Noa Girls of Uganda are the reigning champions after defeating Wiyeta 2-1 in a pulsating final staged at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania last year.

The Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools games will start on 19th -27th August,2023.
