UEFA does not allow expanding the number of players called up, but it does allow one to be put in place of the other

Spain captain Sergio Busquets tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday and left their training base for the EURO 2020. Busquets faces ten days in quarantine, ruling him out of Spain's opening game against Sweden in Seville on June 14.

However, UEFA allows changing a player on the list provided for reasons of injury and Covid-19, such as Busquets. It does not allow expanding the number of players called up, but it does allow one to be put in place of the other.

The day he facilitated the call, Luis Enrique spoke of the U-21 as a possibility to cover that hypothetical loss since Luis de la Fuente's U-21 men come from competing in the European Championship and may still have a competitive rhythm. Martin Zubimendi is the most obvious option to relieve Busquets.

It comes after the Netherlands dropped goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen from their squad because of a positive test.

"We don't know how long it will take until he is 100 per cent fit again. I don't want to take any risks in that respect," Dutch coach Frank de Boer said.
