He leaves Mara at the helm of the league
Mara Sugar head coach Francis Xavier has stepped down from his role in unforeseen turn of events after close to two years with the millers, the club has confirmed.
Xavier, a former AFC Leopards midfielder, joined the sugar men mid last season taking over from John Baraza who had left for Football Kenya Federation Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz.
In his first season on the dugout with the millers, the soft-spoken coach mounted a significant promotion hunt but a lapse in concentration towards the end of the campaign had the club bottle in the promotion race and managed a fourth-place finish nine points behind the automatic elevation spots.
Xavier departure comes on the back of the club’s first defeat of the season to Mathare United in a match played at Utalii grounds, however, club sources indicate that the resignation is not aligned to Saturday’s loss but rather, a personal decision from the gaffer.
A renowned ball carrier in his peak days, Xavier, leaves the millers top of the table after a good start to the campaign that has seen the Narok based club record four wins out of a possible six games and are top joint of the league standings tied on 13 points with the shoppers Naivas FC.
However, the experienced gaffer next destination remains a mystery but sources has confided that he may be headed to Sofapaka FC who are currently under Ezekiel Akwana.
Meanwhile, long serving club assistant coach Godfrey Naibei will step in on interim basis as the hunt for a new expert gets underway.
Naibei has been with the club since their time in the third tier joining from the now defunct Zoo Youth FC and has worked under Stephen Biko, John Baraza and the outgoing Xavier.
