Foals's forward is denying the story and the club believes in his version

Just after Marcus Thuram’s spitting incident was over, and his six-game ban has expired, a new scandal is shaking Borussia Monchengladbach. Media reports suggest that the Foals forward Breel Embolo was caught in an illegal party in Essen, and also tried to run from the police. Even worse than spitting on an opposition player, which was Thuram’s crime. The player denied the accusations, confessing only the presence in Essen, and the club stood behind him. For now.

But what actually happened that night?

We currently have two reports: player's and BILD/police reports. The player himself admitted that after the Stuttgart match he went to see a friend in Essen.

On Sunday night, after the game against Stuttgart, I went to dinner with a friend. In the current circumstances, it was a mistake. The apartment I was in was near the room where this party took place. That was a mistake in this day and age. It was stupid of me and I apologize to my teammates, the club, and especially the fans“ said Embolo on his Instagram profile.

His coach, Mark Rose, was also critical of him and removed him from the squad before the Gladbach-Bremen match on Tuesday.

"The fact is that it is completely pointless to drive as a public person with a friend to another friend on Saturday evening at 2.30 a.m. during the pandemic period. With that alone, I broke a corona rule. We responded and removed him. I think it hurts Breel a lot not to be there today. We have all been living in the pandemic for a few months, and probably all of us were not always completely corona-compliant. To celebrate a party in this situation would be a big difference“ said Rose on Tuesday.

The BILD/police version goes like this:

After an anonymous call, Essen police broke into an illegal party in the Cafe “Extrablatt” on Lake Baldeney. When the officers arrived, a person fled the cafe through a window on the roof and entered an apartment a few meters further through another window. The police then broke into the door to the apartment and found a single person. He was alone in the room. We, therefore, assume that the man who fled over the roof is Embolo” said a police spokesman for the German press agency.

When asked about the incident, Rose immediately asked the counter-question:

"How did this news come about? Did the Bild reporter see him, right? Where did he get the info from? First of all, that's important to me. Breel Embolo assured us that he was not a party guest. Again: someone must have seen that. And not hearsay, according to the report, according to the media - that's always difficult. In the best-case scenario, we can all find ways and means to find out the truth. I also believe that Breel's lawyers will now get involved" said Borussia coach.

Until any new information appears, this is the official truth – Embolo was not at the party but watched basketball at a friend’s house. The Cameroon-born player will be in contention for a place in the first XI against Borussia Dortmund on Friday, along with his teammate Marcus Thuram, whose six-match suspension is up.
