Harambee Stars Boniface Muchiri has described his military promotion as one of the proudest moments of his career, saying it reflects the values of discipline and hard work that have shaped his journey both on the pitch and in uniform.
The Ulinzi Stars assistant captain, who was elevated from Senior Private to Corporal after starring for Harambee Stars at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), said the honour was a reminder that effort never goes unnoticed.
“It is a massive honour to be received this way by my employer, the Kenya Defence Forces,” Muchiri told CAFOnline. “It feels great to be appreciated like this, and it shows that whatever you do is valued.”
He went on to credit the military for creating an environment that allowed him to thrive:
“The support from the KDF in nurturing talent has been immense, and I am proud to be an example that if you perform, good things will follow.”
For Muchiri, the promotion is not just about recognition, it is also about the principles that guide him daily.
“I have managed to be where I am because of the values instilled in me at the KDF. Discipline and hard work are the foundation of the army, and anyone who observes them will always walk with favour by their side.”
The promotion was officially conferred on Wednesday, 27 August, at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi, in a ceremony led by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri and General Officer Commanding Eastern Command, Major General Luka Kutto.
General Kahariri praised Muchiri for his dual service as a footballer and soldier, saying:
“We are very grateful for your commitment, hard work and excellent performance while serving Kenya and, by extension, the KDF. We wish you success in your future assignments and are confident you will continue to excel.”
Muchiri’s rise has been rapid. While the step up to Corporal often takes six to eight years of military service, he has achieved it in just under three since joining the KDF in January 2022.
At CHAN 2024, the 29-year-old was one of Kenya’s standout performers, registering two assists and driving the team to the quarter-finals after topping a group that featured Morocco, Angola, DR Congo and Zambia.
Looking ahead, Muchiri hopes the new rank will inspire others within the army and beyond.
“This is not just about me—it is about every soldier, every teammate, and every young player who believes in discipline and hard work. This promotion is proof that if you keep pushing, good things will always follow.”
