The German is closer by the day to joining the Italian side

When Union Berlin secured a place in the Champions League for the first time in the club's history last season, they brought in Leonardo Bonucci, although the cooperation didn't work out since the Italian left already in January. However, Bologna could do the same and present the fans with a real treat - a signature of Mats Hummels.

As per Gianluca Di Marzio, the German is the top priority for the club from Stadio Renato Dall'Ara to strengthen the defensive line. On the other hand, Hummels is keen on joining Bologna given that he would stay in the Champions League and have the suitable role of an experienced player, which is crucial for the club not only regarding the debut UCL participation but also the Serie A performance and expectations, especially after Thiago Motta set the bar high before joining Juventus.

Di Marzio claims that Hummels is still hesitant about the next step in his career, but that Bologna is an option he is seriously considering. Both Milan sides - AC Milan and Inter - have shown interest in the player but as an alternative solution. Namely, the Rossonerri have a younger player in mind, while Inter's first wish is Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae.

Hummels played 40 games for Borussia Dortmund last season but was practically chased away after a big controversy and a fight with coach Edin Terzić when he issued an ultimatum to the club's management. In the end, both the manager and the player left Signal Iduna Park Stadium. Apart from the three mentioned clubs, another Italian side is interested in the 35-year-old centre-back - Cesc Fabregas' Como.
