It couldn't go on between Laurent Blanc and Olympique Lyonnais

Still one of France's biggest, best-supported and most ambitious clubs, Olympique Lyonnais is going through a painful period in their history. Currently bottom of the Ligue 1 standings, l'OL have been pushed into yet another managerial change.

Laurent Blanc, one of the players who won the 1998 World Cup with Les Bleus, is no longer OL's head coach. Although the club is yet to confirm Blanc's departure, he has effectively been gone since Friday night.

Lyon's director of academy, Jean-Francois Vulliez will take charge of the team while the club searches for the next full-time manager. Former players Sonny Anderson and Jeremie Brechet will serve as temporary assistants.

Three defeats, a draw, ten goals conceded, and a place at the bottom. Blanc simply could not emerge from this catastrophic start to the season unscathed. Since he took over Les Lyonnais in October of last year, Blanc never quite got the hang of the big job at hand. He failed to define a clear style for the team and paid by finishing seventh in the league, missing out on European competition. He was left to try again, but the dismal start to the 2023/24 campaign left club owner John Tetor with no choice.

The OL fans are delighted to finally see the former PSG coach depart Lyon. They produced big banners over the past month, telling Blanc to "leave if he doesn't have the balls to fight". It was the latter.

The names of the Italian Gennaro Gattuso, former Senegal international Habib Beye, former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner, and Botafogo coach Bruno Lage are some of the names mentioned as potential successors. Currently, Gattuso is viewed as the most likely candidate. The former Italy international has been without work since leaving Valencia in January.
