Injuries are an everyday part of football matches. However, some don’t happen on the pitch. Here are the most bizarre ones

We’ve seen all kinds of injuries on football pitches, but footballers are human too, and accidents often happen off the field as well. Here’s a look back at some of the most bizarre injuries players have suffered in completely harmless situations.

Sam Henderson, goalkeeper for Scottish club Queen of the South, had an unfortunate encounter with a domestic animal. He was struck by a cow and had to miss some time on the pitch.

Marco Asensio once missed a Champions League match after developing an infection while attempting to wax his legs.

In football slang, some tackles are called “a crime,” but Carlos Tevez literally experienced one. The Argentine visited his brother, who was serving a 16-year sentence for armed robbery. He even played football with some inmates but ended up tearing a muscle.

Dave Beasant, once a fan favorite at Wimbledon, jeopardized his career in an extremely bizarre way. He dropped a jar of salad on his foot, cutting the tendons in his fingers. Apparently, it was a massive two-kilogram jar.

Santiago Canizares will regret missing the World Cup for the rest of his life due to his own carelessness. While shaving, an aftershave bottle fell on his right leg, causing an injury severe enough to rule him out of the 2002 tournament.

Former Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright had to miss an FA Cup match against Chelsea after falling onto a goalpost sign. The entire accident was even recorded. Similarly, Alex Stepney, who played for Manchester United in the 1970s, first took an awkward blow to the face during a match against Birmingham. Things got worse when he started shouting at teammates and ended up injuring his jaw!

Another unusual goalkeeper story comes from Bradford, where first-choice keeper Matt Clarke had to miss a match after falling down stairs. He was replaced by 41-year-old Neville Southall, making him the oldest goalkeeper in Premier League history.

Sven Grondalen, a former Norwegian international with 77 caps between 1973 and 1984, would have had one more if he hadn’t been careless while jogging. Running through a forest, he collided with a moose and cut his leg, missing a World Cup qualifier against Finland.

Paulo Diogo, playing for Servette, lost a finger after celebrating a goal against Schaffhausen. While climbing a fence during the celebration, his wedding ring got caught, and the amputation was unavoidable.

A similar misfortune happened to Martín Palermo, the popular “Loko,” who broke his leg while over-celebrating a goal.

Legendary defender Alessandro Nesta, known for his passion for video games, once injured a finger due to excessive PlayStation playing. The injury kept him off the field for an entire month.
