With an average age of 32 years and 19 days, the Spaniards fielded the oldest starting line-up in Champions League history

Age is just a number.

That's the philosophy of Sevilla's boss, Diego Alonso, who lined up the oldest-ever starting XI in Champions League history on Wednesday night against PSV Eindhoven.

And, guess what - he was almost right. Too bad he made some changes in the second half, brought on some youngsters, and dropped a two-goal lead to lose shockingly, 2-3.

The team, with an average age of 32 years and 19 days - with Lukebakio, Sow and En-Nesiry being the youngest at 26 - managed to get a much-deserved 2-0 lead against much younger Dutch rivals before succumbing to a disappointing late 2-3 loss.

Thus, they've beaten the record of 31 years and 331 days set by Inter on 22 February 2012 (1-0 loss at Olympique Marseille).

Tonight, Sevilla opened the scoring against the Dutch slot thanks to 37-year-old star veteran Sergio Ramos, who slotted home Ivan Rakitic's free-kick for the hosts.

Youssef En-Nesyri doubled the lead shortly after the break following Acuna's impeccable through-ball.

However, PSV firstly managed to pull one back thanks to Ismael Saibari's sensational no-look stunner, but it was not enough for at least a draw.

And then came Gudelj. The Serbian defender failed to clear one ball from the goal-line, and the visitors grabbed a draw, we all thought. The total comeback was just around the corner...

A superb stoppage-time counter stunned the hosts as they said goodbye to the elite competition a game before the end of the group stage.
