Bees' lethal sting kills Magpies, Villa stomp Cherries as Onana and Dibu shine

Brentford and Aston Villa celebrate deserved wins in the opening games of the English Premier League Sunday menu

We expected two super-exciting battles between evenly matched Premier League sides, but instead, Aston Villa and Brentford brushed aside Bournemouth and Newcastle United for landslide victories on Sunday afternoon.

Unai Emery's Villa stomped Bournemouth 4-0 with two goals in each half, as Amadou Onana and Emiliano Martinez led the hosts to their fifth EPL win. Buendia opened the scoring for the Villans around the half-hour mark before Onana doubled the lead near the break.

Unlike some previous games, the Cherries failed to bounce back from the two-goal deficit, although the home side threw them a lifebelt after the break. However, Dibu Martinez denied Semenyo's penalty, and from that moment on, there was absolutely no dilemma about the direction the game was heading.

The Cherries' defence crumbled in the later stages of the match, as Ross Barkley buried a lovely header to make it 3-0 before Maalen's final verdict, 4-0.

It could have been worse for Andoni Iraola's side, but Maalen missed a stoppage-time sitter in a one-on-one situation in front of Bournemouth's keeper Djordje Petrovic.

At the same time, Brentford fought vigorously to come back against Newcastle United at home after trailing 1-0. Harvey Barnes made a mess in the rival's box, dribbling past two Brentford defenders before heading it home for the visitors' lead, 0-1.

Alas, same old, same old for the Magpies... Just like in their previous away game against West Ham, Eddie Howe's boys were unable to hold onto that lead and conceded three more goals for another excruciating defeat, as they are still without a single away win since the start of the season.

The spectators at the Gtech Community Stadium witnessed another brilliant set-piece masterpiece coming from a long throw-in, which has become Brentford's trademark during this EPL campaign. With the game tied at 1-1, Dan Burn accidentally took down Ouattara in the box. Still, the referees (including the VAR officials) decided there was no penalty, despite it being as clear as it gets on the replay. Bizarrely, Burn was sent off shortly after, and the hosts were awarded a spot kick after a call that was less suspicious than the previous one.

Ten-man Newcastle were unable to get back from the abyss as Igor Thiago scored a brace to push his side to a deserved 3-1 win, which puts them in 12th place.
