Bayern's biggest embarassment in 30 years, Tuchel is a "double idiot"

And around the corner is a hot visit to Borussia Dortmund, who - just like Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen - dream of dethroning the Bavarians

Bayern Munich can look scary. Like in the Champions League where they won every match so far. Or in the Bundesliga, where last weekend they pulverized Darmstadt 8-0.

But Bayern can also look funny. Bayern can look "idiotic" under Tuchel, as Bild wrote today. Thomas Tuchel now looks like a "double idiot."

Why double?

The first time Bayern looked idiotic in the opinion of a German newspaper was when they lost the German Supercup to Leipzig. The second time was last night when they were defeated in the German Cup by third-division Saarbrücken. Tuchel and Bayern owe some explanation.

"Last night's relegation by Saarbrücken is Bayern's biggest defeat in the Cup since 1994 and our relegation by Vestenbergsgreuth," said the famous Lothar Matthaus, the biggest critic of what happened in Bayern in recent years.

Matthaus was the captain of the generation that earned the nickname FC Hollywood because of the frequent scandals in the club and the dressing room. The peak of Hollywood was the 1994/95 season, in which they finished sixth in the Bundesliga, and at the start of the competition in the German Cup, they were eliminated by the third-division side Vestenbergsgreuth. It was the first match of the legendary Giovanni Trapatoni on the Bayern bench.

"The same tragedy happened to us, but being relegated to the German Cup four years in a row is really too much. Three years ago, Bayern were relegated from second division Kiel, the season before last they lost 0-5 in Mönchengladbach, and last season at home against Freiburg. Now also from Saarbrücken. This is inexplicable", says Matthaus.

Of course, Thomas Tuchel is on the attack. Such a debacle deserves a portion of heavy criticism. Last night, they did not send the strongest team on the field, but the starting line-up included Neuer, Kim, De Ligt, Davies, Kimmich, Sane, Muller... And that was enough to overcome a third-tier team.

"Thomas Tuchel gambled in Saarbrücken. If I were him, I'd start with the strongest team and then rotate after 50 or 60 minutes when I'm done. It's a rather unfortunate decision not to introduce Harry Kane at all. On the other hand, there were enough experienced players on the field to decide the game".

Matthaus believes this is no fluke despite some convincing Champions League and Bundesliga triumphs.

"For the last few weeks, Bayern have not been convincing to me despite the good results. I miss that natural Bayern dominance. There was quite a bit of luck in the wins against Copenhagen, Mainz and Galatasaray. The team does not look stable and there is no automatic motion in the game. I see no progress. The victories of 7-0 against Bochum and 8-0 against Darmstadt cannot mask that," Matthaus believes.

Is Bayern threatened with the first season without a trophy since 2012? Two trophies have already gone, and the competition in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig and especially the great Leverkusen seems stronger than in the previous ten years. Not to mention the Champions League, at least there are a few clubs that are bigger favorites than the Bavarians.

Tuchel won the Bundesliga title in the previous campaign and saved the season, but after the transfer window and the pre-season with the team, it doesn't seem like he improved Bayern much. Everything is solved mainly by the individual class of Kane, Musiala and Sane. The style of play is more and more under question, and Tuchel's coaching mark is less and less evident.

But this is where the work of the club's administration is already under question. Since Guardiola, no coach at Bayern has lasted more than three years, which means that changing coaches cannot be the only solution. Ancelotti, Kovac, Flick and Nagelsmann were replaced.

This summer, the transfer window was quite out of Bayern's style. Apart from the previously agreed free transfers of Laimer and Guerreiro (who is not playing) and the paid clause for Kim as distrust grew in De Ligt and Upamecano, everything else was chaotic. The entire summer was spent negotiating with Tottenham about Harry Kane, and choosing a second goalkeeper was more than frivolous with all the names being floated around.

The departures of Mane, Sabitzer, Sommer and even the dissatisfied Gravenberch and Nubel made sense. Lucas Hernandez forced a transfer to PSG, and later Benjamin Pavard at the very end of the market. This is where Bayern came across as frivolous. Neither was a replacement brought in for Pavard, nor previously for Stanisic, who left on loan at Leverkusen.

Proof of that was seen in Saarbrücken last night. When De Ligt got injured and had to come off in the 19th minute, Tuchel had no sweeper to step in, so Kimmich had to move from midfield to the heart of the defence. The problem is that Tuchel knowingly took a risk because the Dutchman has just come out of injury. And now he will have to risk the newly recovered Upamecano next weekend as he has to take De Ligt's place.

And the upcoming away game is more than hot. Bayern are going to meet Borussia Dortmund, who have not lost in the Bundesliga for 17 matches, and this season they have only lost to Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions. Borussia are highly motivated to leapfrog Bayern with a win and drop them to third place. In that case, the championship race would become much more uncertain. Tuchel would also risk losing the third domestic trophy of the season. And that would most certainly mean losing your job. Hoping to win the Champions League would be a utopia which Bayern's management should not allow. Nor will they. As was the case with Nagelsmann.

Truth be told, in previous years, Bayern were able to turn the season around with victories and a show of force against Borussia, when the yellow and black would overexpose themselves and think they are stronger. Next weekend and Der Klassiker could decide a lot of this season…
