Bayern one win away from the title after crushing Leverkusen

Choupo-Moting and Kimmich netted for the Bavarians

Not even a knowledge that their coach Hansi Flick will leave at the end of the season couldn’t deter Bayern Munich players from their main goal: to win this match and secure the ninth consecutive title in Bundesliga as soon as possible. And with an easy win against Leverkusen and after a surprise Leipzig loss to Cologne, the title is almost there: Bayern – Bayer 2-0.

After changing the coach, Leverkusen had a mini series of three unbeaten games (one draw, two wins) and came to Allianz Arena in a confident mood, but they were put down to earth quickly by the current champions. There wasn’t any doubt throughout the 90 minutes about who will win this. Bayern were just too strong and concentrated for Bayer, who will have to find points for their Europa League quest in other games.

The game started and soon, Bayer’s Leon Bailey stormed into the penalty area where he was contacted by Manuel Neuer, but VAR didn’t even bother to check out a possible penalty. Seconds after that, it was 1-0 for the hosts. Alaba found Muller, whose shot was saved by Hradecky, but the ball bounced to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who was precise: 1-0, 7th minute. Just six minutes after the lead, Bayern scored again, and this time, it was an error from Bayer’s defense, and Kimmich scored an excellent goal from the edge of the area.

The best chance of the match came from David Alaba in the 44th minute, but Hradecky made a superb save to deny the Austrian’s free kick. The second half showed a much better performance from Bayer, but only in terms of having the ball a bit more, and creating a few half-chances. Neuer had to interviene only once, after Amiri’s shot from 18 meters. Leverkusen just couldn’t score tonight.

After a win in this match, Bayern is now 10 points ahead of second placed Leipzig, who lost to relegation strugglers Cologne, so if the Bavarians win in Mainz, the title race will be officially over.
