Jerome Boateng announces the end of his very successful football career

A World Cup winner, a two-time Champions League champion, and a pillar of Bayern Munich's golden era - Jerome Boateng has decided it's time to hang up his boots.

The 37-year-old German defender announced his retirement in an emotional video message on Instagram:

"I've played for a long time, for great clubs and for my country. I've learned, I've won, I've lost, and I've grown. Football has given me so much, but now it's time to move on. Not because I have to, but because I'm ready."

Born in Berlin to Ghanaian roots, Boateng came through Hertha's academy before moving on to Hamburg and then Manchester City. But it was at Bayern Munich, where he spent a decade between 2011 and 2021, that he truly became a household name. There, he won every trophy on offer, including two Champions League crowns (2013, 2020) and nine Bundesliga titles, leaving an indelible mark at the Allianz Arena.

After leaving Munich, his career took him to Lyon, Salernitana, and most recently LASK Linz. Wherever he went, Boateng carried with him the aura of a world champion.

"I'm grateful to all the clubs, the fans, the people who supported me, and above all my family and children. They were always by my side," he added, as images from his career rolled in the background.

In the Germany shirt, Boateng earned 76 caps. His finest moment came in Brazil, 2014, where he lifted the World Cup after Joachim Low’s team conquered the world. He also reached the semi-finals of Euro 2012 and Euro 2016, and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

From Berlin to Rio, Munich to Wembley, Boateng's career was defined by battles on the biggest stages - a career now closed, but one that will be remembered in German football history.
