Vincent Kompany’s side went into the winter break in ominous form, brushing aside Heidenheim 4-0 on December 21. It was another ruthless attacking display, marking the 19th time in 25 matches this season that Bayern have netted three or more goals. Their home form has been just as intimidating: ten wins and a draw from 11 league games in Munich, despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Mainz in their most recent outing at the Allianz Arena.
Wolfsburg, by contrast, find themselves hovering just above the relegation battle in 14th place with 15 points. They signed off before the break with a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Freiburg, a game in which they twice held the lead but ultimately came away empty-handed — bringing an end to a three-match unbeaten run.
Still, there have been signs of life under Daniel Bauer. His side won two of those three unbeaten matches and have hit three goals in each of their last three fixtures. A positive result in Munich would extend their current away resilience, while victory would mark a third win in five road games.
Bayern’s attacking trio of Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz all found the net against Heidenheim and are expected to start again. In midfield, Joshua Kimmich’s ankle problem rules him out, placing greater creative responsibility on Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic. At the back, Josip Stanisic should continue at left-back with Alphonso Davies still recovering from a long-term injury.
Wolfsburg will travel without key attackers, with Mohamed El Amine Amoura away on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Algeria, while Jonas Wind is also unavailable.
