Barca booked their place in the last eight in emphatic fashion. After a nervy start against Newcastle United, they hit top gear and overwhelmed the English side 8–3 on aggregate, marking their third consecutive quarterfinal appearance.
Atletico also came through a high-scoring tie, beating Tottenham Hotspur 7–5 across two legs in a matchup that felt more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.
This upcoming showdown will be their fifth meeting of the season, with Barcelona winning three of the previous four, including a 2–1 victory at the Metropolitano last weekend that strengthened their grip on the La Liga title race. Still, Atletico delivered the most painful blow by knocking Barca out of the Copa del Rey semifinals.
That defeat is still fresh in the minds of Hansi Flick’s side, who will be eager for payback when Atletico visit Camp Nou on Wednesday. Barcelona are also determined to end their 11-year wait for Champions League glory—a drought that began when Diego Simeone’s Atletico eliminated them in the 2015–16 quarterfinals.
The visitors, however, will believe they can repeat that feat. Flick’s team understands the importance of building a strong advantage in the first leg, especially after their recent cup disappointment, and will look to make the most of their home form.
Atletico, on the other hand, will rely on their counter-attacking strength to exploit Barcelona’s high defensive line, though constant pressure from the hosts could eventually test their resilience.
Barcelona’s midfield has been weakened by injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal, which may lead Flick to deploy the adaptable Eric Garcia alongside Pedri. Jules Kounde is expected to return at right-back, adding stability to the defense.
On the flanks, Marcus Rashford is likely to feature on the left as he continues to push for a permanent move, while Joao Cancelo will look to maintain his strong run of form, with Alejandro Balde nearing a comeback.
In attack, Dani Olmo filled in as a false nine over the weekend, but Robert Lewandowski could return to the starting lineup after his recent Champions League brace. Olmo may instead drop into an attacking midfield role, although Fermin Lopez’s impressive European displays could give him the edge, lining up alongside the electric Lamine Yamal.
Atletico are also dealing with midfield absences, with Johnny Cardoso and Pablo Barrios unavailable. This could see Simeone rely on Marcos Llorente and Koke to hold things together in the center of the park.
🚨🥹 Diego Simeone, trying to hold back his tears, shows his appreciation for Antoine Griezmann:

Defensively, David Hancko and Matteo Ruggeri are expected to return after being rested, while Marc Pubill and, crucially, goalkeeper Jan Oblak should also come back into the lineup as Atletico field their strongest possible backline.
Going forward, Ademola Lookman and Giuliano Simeone will look to capitalize on the space behind Barcelona’s defense, while Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez are expected to pose the biggest threat in front of goal for the visitors.
