Bafana Bafana are bound for World Cup after a comfortable win over Rwanda

South Africa won 3-0 against the Wasps and finished as the first in Group C
South Africa fans were nervous ahead of the final match day against Rwanda. Bafana Bafana didn‘t have much luck in the last month or so. First they were docked three points after fielding an illegible player against Lesoto and then they somehow failed to win against Zimbabwe at home (0-0) even thou the guests were with 10 man for half and hour. So, before the today‘s match they were second in Group C and had two scenarios which would give them World Cup qualifications: a win over Rwanda and a win from Nigeria over direct opponents Benin or a draw between Nigeria and Benin with South Africa‘s win with two or more goals. In the end, they managed both and qualified for the World Cup as group leaders: Bafana Bafana – Rwanda 3-0.

Although Amavubi were much stronger than Zimbabwe, they failed to even score a single goal and yet to manage a draw. They managed only four shots in total (not a single one on target) while South Africa showed all of their qualities and recorded an easy win. Thalente Mbatha was on target after only five minutes and Bafana Bafana players took the guests‘ nickname as they attacked Rwanda like wasps, looking for that second goal. Appollis had a great opportunity in the 12th minute but the visiting keeper saved it. Mokoena, whose participation against Lesoto was crucial for Bafana‘s punishment had a good header minutes later but the ball went over the bar. After about 10 minutes of dull play, the second goal came for the hosts. Appollis latched onto Modiba’s cutback. His initial air-swipe was dealt with, but it came back to him, and he finished it with a strong effort into the top corner.
It was clear to everybody that Rwanda players just didn‘t show up and were no match tonight against South Africa, but the home team just wanted that third goal just in case and they continued attacking in the second half as well. Rwanda‘s Ntwari saved a couple of good opportunities for South Africa but then he didn‘t react well in the 73rd minute after a corner kick, allowing Evidence Makgopa to secure the victory. Rwanda‘s Mahire managed to hit the post in the 84th minute and that was all Amavubi managed to do during the game.
