The legendary Gabonese striker was on the verge of joining a Turkish club, but instead is now expected to strengthen the ranks of a newly promoted La Liga side
Once valued at more than €60 million, his market price has now dropped dramatically. Understandably so, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is nearing the end of his career, but he still has plenty to offer. The difference is that he will no longer be doing it at Marseille, but at Deportivo La Coruna.
The Gabonese striker is set to join the newly promoted La Liga side, adding a new dimension to the club from Riazor. After years of wandering in the Segunda Division and even spending time in the third tier, Deportivo will finally return to Spain’s top flight. To stay there, the club needs proven quality, and despite being 37 years old, Aubameyang still fits that description. The transfer fee, however, will be little more than symbolic.

According to reports from France, Marseille will receive just €1.5 million in compensation for the experienced goalscorer. The hierarchy at the Velodrome believes that the former Saint-Etienne, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, and Barcelona star is no longer operating at the level required for a club with Marseille’s ambitions, and they are therefore willing to let him move to Galicia a year before the expiration of his contract.
Interestingly, Aubameyang reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from Turkish second-division side Corum just a few days ago. The club was prepared to pay him €3.5 million per year on a two-year deal, but the Gabon international had no interest in the move. Instead, he patiently waited for an opportunity from one of Europe’s top five leagues—and Spain came calling.
After all, he has already proven himself on the Iberian Peninsula. During his loan spell from Arsenal, Aubameyang scored 13 goals in just 21 appearances for Barcelona.
Following that stint, he signed for Chelsea before joining Marseille as a free agent in the summer of 2023. In 2024, he was sold to Saudi side Al-Qadsiah for €9 million, only to return to the Velodrome in 2025. Across his two spells with Marseille, he amassed 44 goals and 21 assists in 92 appearances.
At Riazor, Aubameyang will be welcomed with open arms. Deportivo, alongside Racing Santander and Malaga, is helping bring back the nostalgic feel of Spanish football’s elite level.
Determined to make an immediate impact in La Liga, the club from La Coruna has already strengthened its squad by signing Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Roman, Polish Motor Lublin defender Bright Ede, De Graafschap midfielder Teun Gezelhart, former Fiorentina midfielder Lorenzo Amatucci, and Danish winger Jonathan Asp Jensen from Bayern Munich’s reserve team.
Aubameyang’s arrival would be the icing on the cake of a transfer window that could signal the awakening of a sleeping giant.
