Athletic score four goals and lose 3-2

Athletic Club team handed Girona three points on a silver platter by scoring two own goals when the two teams met at San Mames on Sunday evening. And despite pushing the team from Catalonia all the way, the Basque team couldn't avoid a 3-2 defeat.

Up until today, Girona have never won in Bilbao. They've never even scored a goal. But their kind hosts made sure Michel's men felt nice and cosy.

The team from Bilbao is getting ready for the upcoming Copa Del Rey semi-final against Osasuna, but their self-confidence seems to be very low. Ernesto Valverde's team allowed Girona's Aleix Garcia to score inside the opening five minutes, and they proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot.

To be honest, the red and whites were unlucky as well. Their first-choice goalkeeper Unai Simon picked up an injury and had to be substituted before the start of the second half. Athletic were trailing 3-1 at that point after De Marcos' own goal doubled the visitors' lead.

Yuri Berchiche reduced the deficit with a nice shot from outside the area, but all their efforts were rendered moot after Vesga diverted the ball into his net just after the restart.

Inaki Williams had the ball in Paulo Gazzaniga's net, but the goal didn't count as VAR spotted a slight offside infringement by the Ghana international.

The boys from San Mames did their best to get back in the game, but all they could do was score a late consolation through veteran Raul Garcia.
