Gasperini did not like Lookman’s enthusiasm
Atalanta was written off at halftime, trailing by four goals against Club Brugge, but a glimmer of hope appeared in the final 45 minutes of the two-legged tie. Ademola Lookman came off the bench and gave Bergamo’s team a spark.

He reduced the deficit to 1-3 just 36 seconds after entering the pitch, and about ten minutes later, he had a golden opportunity to ignite the stadium and bring Orobics within two goals with around 30 minutes left to play. "Lookman should not have taken the penalty. He is one of the worst penalty takers I have ever seen. To be honest, he is terrible at taking penalties, even in training. He rarely scores... Retegui and De Ketelaere, the designated takers, were on the pitch, but in a rush of enthusiasm, he decided to take it himself, and that is something I really don’t like", Atalanta’s coach Gian Piero Gasperini angrily commented after the match.

Atalanta has had penalty struggles this season. Mateo Retegui missed against Arsenal and Torino in matches that ended 0-0. Mario Pasalic also missed in the second game against Torino. Retegui has scored only two out of four, while De Ketelaere converted his only attempt against Real Madrid. A very poor record from the penalty spot...
This isn’t the first time Lookman has been in the spotlight for a missed penalty. While playing for Fulham, he attempted a ‘Panenka’ against West Ham and embarrassed himself...
