As if it was not bad enough already: Lloris out for remainder of season

A thigh injury he suffered during that horrible first half at St James' Park (6-1 for Newcastle) will cost the Spurs captain even more than he thought

Hugo Lloris could have played his final game for Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle with a thigh injury set to sideline him for the remainder of the season.

The Tottenham captain was forced off at half-time of the 6-1 battering at St James' Park.

Lloris has only a year remaining on his contract leading to speculation he could leave the club he joined more than a decade ago in 2012.

"Hugo's out for the season," acting head coach Ryan Mason confirmed on Friday. "We had the results back. Obviously disappointing, but we kind of feared that initially. We did some more tests, and he won't play for us again this season.

"I can't speak about next season, but what I can say is that he has a very important role for us until the end of the season.

"We need him. We need him to be part of the group, and I'm sure he will be."

Tottenham will have three games remaining following this weekend, with defender Ryan Sessegnon also ruled out from featuring.

Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who himself was ruled out for the season after suffering an ACL injury back in February, is progressing well in his recovery.

"These types of injuries you have to be very careful with," Mason added. "We see sometimes they can reoccur. We're assessing him day by day.

"He's making progress, but it's probably too early to set a return date."

Tottenham are seventh in the Premier League table, nine points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, having played a game more.
