‘Arsenal is an ideal club for me’

One of the biggest saga’s in June transfer window is finally over - Viktor Gyokeres is a new Arsenal player. After so many seasons, the Gunners finally got a proper striker, not a ‘forward’ who can play at the number 9, but is actually more comfortable on the wings or an attacking midfielder turned into a false 9. He was paid 73 million euros after a bitter negotiations with Sporting, as the Lisbon club squeezed the last penny from Arsenal. Ruben Amorim tried to lure his former player to join him to Manchester United, but the Swedish striker refused for whatever reason and insisted to come to the Emirates no matter what.

Finally he got his which and was quick to explain why he wanted to come.

"I felt like it was the ideal club for me. What I heard from Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta when I spoke to them and what I've seen over the last few years, how they've been playing football. When I played against Arsenal last season, I felt they were a very strong team and very difficult to play against. That made me choose Arsenal, and of course, the history of the club and its huge fans. It's been incredible to see all the support they've given me even before I arrived. That's what it's all about. It'll be great to see them in the stadiums as well," said the Swede for the official website.

We want a player who loves United, not only UCL, says Amorim

Gyokeres is no stranger to English football. He actually came to Sporting in a record deal from England, as he played in the Championship side Coventry and scored 43 goals, along with 17 assists in 116 appearances. Before that, he was in Brighton and was sent to another loan (apart from Coventry) – to Swansea.

"It's a big day for me and everyone around me. I'm really looking forward to getting started and meeting everyone at the club, and to starting to play football for this great club. I know the club; they didn't have to convince me of the idea; I was already excited beforehand. Coming here is a big deal for me, to be honest. I always want to score. Being part of this club and scoring with this shirt and badge in front of all the fans is a dream come true. It will be an incredible feeling. I started here in England, and it seems like an eternity ago. I think I've improved a lot since then. Now I want to prove my worth and play well for the team" he added.
