The Spanish defender is playing the season of his life under the baton of a talented German, after a frustrating saga with Pep Guardiola
From the younger squads of Manchester City, through Mallorca, NAC Breda, PSV to the first team of the Citizens. However, Angelino was simply not destined to succeed at the Etihad. City sold him to PSV for 6 million USD (658 million KSH) and bought him back for 12,000,000, but Pep Guardiola did not recognize a football player who earned the label of one of the best in the Bundesliga for his performances this season.
"Pep killed my self-confidence. Since my return from Eindhoven to City, I was judged for pre-season, two games, and then I didn't get my chance until a few months. It is hard to play one game every two months so I am just happy that happened so I could come here and meet Julian and everyone here." said the Spaniard.
Last season, 13 bleak appearances for the Citizens in all competitions and two assists. At the end of 2020, he left for Leipzig, and that is when Angelino's football revolution began. By the end of the season, 18 games, one goal and five assists, in the current competition year, he collected eight goals and 11 assists through 31 appearances in all competitions. When asked to compare Julian Nagelsmann, under whom he is experiencing a renaissance and playing career football, and Pep Guardiola, Angelino answered with no dilemma.
"One restored my self-confidence and let me play. The other just didn't.”
Red Bull Leipzig brought the Spaniard on loan with the buy-out option worth 2.4 million USD euros some 13 months ago. And as he imposed himself as the best player of the Bulls, the club did not hesitate to buy him for 22 million USD and sign a contract with him until 2025.
"In Leipzig, I felt trusted from day one. The club and the coach were an amazing springboard for me. I am happy to be able to play constantly in Leipzig."
The club from Red Bull Arena does not have an enviable situation in the Champions League after the defeat by Liverpool (2:0) in the first leg, but in the Bundesliga, they are only two points behind Bayern and hope that under the command of super talented Julian Nagelsmann they can break the eight-year dominance of Bavarians.
"He can coach any team, there are not many managers like him. He already manages a quality team, but imagine what he would do if he had even better players. Tactically, he always finds the right way towards the opponent's goal. We have to work hard, be focused and give our best on the pitch. We will see how it will be by the end of the season ", concluded Angelino.
