After Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum, Stevan Gerrard is apparently interested in signing Joel Matip and Joe Gamez in order to save his Al-Ettifaq job
If you're far away from home and things don't go as planned, the best solution is to look for someone you already know, someone from your old place, the one you can rely on at any time. And that ancient wisdom is something Steven Gerrard is obviously well aware of. The legendary Liverpool and England midfielder is struggling as Al-Ettifaq's boss in Saudi Arabia, and the signings of former Reds' captain Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum haven't improved things too much for Stevie G.
However, that didn't persuade him to give up on familiar faces from his old place, and he's apparently coming for more.
According to sports broadcaster and journalist Ben Jacobs, Joel Matip and Joe Gomes have been discussed as possible reinforcements by Gerrard, who is under pressure as Al Ettifaq after a miserable run in the Saudi Pro League.
Speaking to Caught Offside, he said:
"Ettifaq are exploring a range of ambitious options both in January and in the next transfer window to bolster Gerrard's squad. Two Al-Ettifaq targets for this window are Fenerbahce's Ryan Kent and Al-Hilal's Abdulellah Al-Malki. Steven Gerrard was part of a three-hour recruitment meeting on Monday where Liverpool's Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, and Villa's Bertrand Traore, were also discussed for July 2024."
Meanwhile, Liverpool are preparing for Wednesday's League Cup encounter with Fulham.
And while Matip - whose Reds deal runs out in June - is currently recovering from a long-term injury, Gomez should find himself in the starting XI for the first semi-final leg against the Cottagers. An already depleted defensive line, though, will be strengthened by Virgil van Dijk, who is set to return to the fold this evening.
