Man United's huge talent was on the verge of leaving the club while the Portuguese was in charge, but he has blossomed under the new manager, and the Red Devils are keen to keep him

At one point, Kobbie Mainoo was considered one of the greatest prospects Manchester United's academy has produced in years. He played regularly for the Red Devils and even earned a national team call-up, but was suddenly dropped from favour by then-manager Ruben Amorim.

Even though several United legends and the general public advocated for the youngster and praised him, the Portuguese simply did not see him as a valuable asset, stubbornly omitting him from the team.

Mainoo made 14 appearances this season in all competitions under Amorim, clocking less than 25 minutes per game. Once the 41-year-old tactician left, the midfielder breathed a sigh of relief and blossomed.

Since Michael Carrick sat on United's bench, the soon-to-be 21-year-old featured in each of the 10 games they played and clocked 90 minutes in all of them except the match against Newcastle, when he was subbed off in the 76th minute.

In that period, he reminded everyone of his old self, becoming the Red Devils' key midfielder and forming a fantastic partnership with Casemiro.

Thomas Tuchel rewarded Mainoo's excellent performances with a call-up for England, bringing him back to the team after 17 months. Furthermore, the youngster is very likely to be part of the Three Lions' 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

The cherry on top of the fantastic period Mainoo is having is the information The Athletic exclusively revealed, stating that negotiations between United and the youngster over a new contract are in the final stages.

His current deal expires in June 2027, but no one at Old Trafford wants to risk anything, given that numerous renowned sides were interested in him during his struggling phase.

It's a short leap from Amorim's cast-off to Carrick's treasure, isn't it?
