Alli is well, Alli is well! Mourinho's Spurs are through without breaking a sweat

Dele Alli showed his old self to help Tottenham defeat the underdogs Wolfsberger - 4:0 in the end

With the Spurs' north London rivals Arsenal expected to play their second leg against Benfica a few short miles away at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday - Tottenham played their second leg against Austrian side Wolfsberger on a Wednesday evening. Not a usual time for a Europa League match but there was nothing unusual with the final score - 4:0 for the English team.

They may be stumbling domestically, but Tottenham’s 4-1 win in the first leg put them just three goals away from becoming the first ever English team to score 100 goals in the Europa League and progress already looked somewhat guaranteed. Although sporting disappointing four-game Premier League home form (W1, D1, L2), defeating Wolfsberger in the first leg didn’t surprise many, especially as it was held at a neutral venue.

It did not take much for the Spurs to give the Austrians a warm "welcome". And what a goal it was by the forgotten Dele Alli! It was as if he saw the goal of Olivier Giroud against Atletico Madrid and said "Hold my beer". In the 10th minute, Dele Alli started the Spurs attack before ending in the most emphatic fashion. The ball came in from the right, Alli's touch sent the ball into the air and all he could do is go for an overhead kick. Has he got the technique and quality to pull it off? You bet he does, picking out the bottom corner with a stunning effort. Enjoy...

Spurs played without their dynamic duo Kane - Son, even without Lucas Moura, but it did not make much difference. The quality gap was obvious, first half passed in Tottenham's attempts to multiply their lead. The guests showed they do not possess what it takes to endanger Spurs' second goalkeeper, Joe Hart. Bergwijn and Lamela operated endlessly switching sides, trying to end the match-up as soon as possible so Mourinho's team could turn to their next hurdle called Burnley in the Premier League. Carlos Vinicius was close to doubling the lead in the 43rd minute but Henriksson somehow swept the ball of the goal line and into play. Not much work for Hart or Wolfsberger's goalkeeper Kuttin in the first half - of course, the latter is still probably replaying that Alli scissor kick in his head over and over again.

What Carlos Vinicius did not manage before the end of the first period, he did in the 50th minute. Dele Alli collected an assist to go with his first-half stunner. The Spurs forward drove down the left and whipped a teasing ball to the back post which was begging to be headed in, and Carlos Vinicius duly obliged. It was the Brazilian's eighth goal of the season, and Spurs had 6-1 on aggregate.

In the 54th minute, Erik Lamela had a promising opportunity - he ran with the ball towards the keeper and pulled the trigger from close range, but Manuel Kuttin anticipated his intention and made an amazing save to stop the shot going into the net. Spurs were close to scoring the third goal in the 67th minute when Alli got into a nice position down the left channel and tried to pick out the far corner with a crisp drive, but Kuttin was on hand with a decent save to prevent Spurs running further clear.

That third goal eventually came - courtesy of Gareth Bale, who subbed Lamela in the 69th minute. Just 4 minutes later, Bale received a precise pass inside the box from the man of the match Dele Alli and he managed to beat the goalkeeper with a brilliant shot into the top left corner to make it 3:0. It was 4:0 just ten minutes later when Carlos Vinicius doubled his tally. Some very poor defending from the opponent allowed him the chance to get to the edge of the box and he made no mistake with a lovely finish. The assist was provided by the 16-year-old Dane Scarlett.

After the fourth goal from the hosts, all players' thoughts were already in their locker rooms. Mourinho's squad sees a victory against Burnley on Sunday as a must to keep their hopes of top four alive. As far as their Europa League journey is considered, they will know their next opponent after the Friday, the 26th of February, draw.
