Alisson in the wonderland of goalscoring keepers

Liverpool custodian is only the sixth '1' to score since the inaugural season of the EPL in 1992 and the first one to nail a header

In modern-day journalism, it's common to see those too often used expressions like 'wonderful', 'rare', 'outstanding' to describe something that occurred on the pitch. However, in the case of Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker and his last-gasp winner against WBA on Sunday, all of those adjectives seem truly deserved.

What the Brazilian custodian did - nailing a header that kept Reds' hopes of reaching the UCL next season - is praiseworthy by all means. Those football geeks that keep an eye on the most unordinary stats have found that he is only the sixth '1' to score a goal since the establishment of the Premier League and the very first one to do it with his head. Incredible, indeed!

After the inaugural season (in 1992), we had to wait nine long years to see the first keeper-scorer in the English top division. It was none other than legendary Peter Schmeichel, only not in a shirt of his Manchester United or maybe their city rivals, but as Aston Vila custodian in the penultimate campaign of his 30-year-long career.

On 20 October 2001, he nailed a banger against Everton at Goodison Park, just like Alisson late in the stoppage time. He was left totally unmarked on the far post and hit a magnificent volley to tie the game.

Less than three years later, on 21 February 2004, Brad Friedel helped his Blackburn strikers at Charlton, with an extremely handy tap-in that seemed like a masterpiece of a true poacher.

The rest of the keeper goals - it was three of them, to be precise - are pretty much a consequence of lack and wind as a mighty opponent for inexperienced keepers, who were fooled with the ball trajectory. Paul Robinson, Tim Howard (hm, quite interesting, another American goalie after Friedel) and Asmir Begovic were lucky enough to celebrate 80-yards goals, but it all happened more than a decade ago.

So, let's applaud Alisson, whose striker-a-like header brought back that almost forgotten magic of keepers' wonder goals.
