Having been held to a goalless draw in the first-leg at the new Independence Stadium in Bakau last weekend, Algeria needed their exciting talent Adil Boulbina to come to their rescue in the decider.

The youngster netted a brace in the second half to see Algeria seal their third appearance at the CHAN finals, which will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Following a troubled build-up - which included visitors Gambia being stranded in Mauritania - Algeria took the lead just after halftime through Abderrahmane Meziane, before Boulbina added a double in the 71st and 91st minutes respectively.

With the win, Algeria will now take up their place in Group C, where they will join Uganda, Niger and Guinea.

The fourth team in the Group will be decided on Sunday, 11 May afternoon, when South Africa face Malawi in a crucial second leg to be played at Loftus Versfeld.

Malawi last week stunned Bafana Bafana, recording a 1-0 victory.

Algeria’s previous participation in CHAN has seen them finish fourth in 2011, and as runners-up in 2023, when they hosted the competition.

Hosts of the tournament’s opening and closing ceremony will be decided on Tuesday, 13 May.
