"Alexis Sanchez is exactly what we need" is a statement from 2022

Pablo Longoria said it, honestly!

Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez was once upon a time among the best players on Earth. Quick, direct, and technically perfect, he was fantastic for Udinese, Barcelona and Arsenal. But even though his move to Manchester United in 2018 turned out to be a poor choice, there are still people today who would love to have the now-33-year-old forward in their squad. In August 2022, that's Olympique de Marseille.

OM president Pablo Longoria is working hard to secure the signing of Alexis Sanchez on a free transfer. The only problem is that Sanchez isn't a free agent - at least not yet. The forward still has a year left on his Inter deal, but last week it was reported that he had ripped up his contract after being informed that he was no longer part of Simone Inzaghi's plans.

According to Foot Mercato, Sanchez has a verbal agreement in place to join Igor Tudor's team in the next day or two. Even though it's been nearly a decade since we've seen the best of the Chilean legend, Longoria went on record to say that the little goalscorer is exactly what they need at Stade Velodrome.

"Alexis' profile completely suits what we're trying to achieve here. He is exactly what we need."

Sánchez will earn around $3 million in the south of France, with his addition to the wage bill meaning that Marseille hope to sell someone. At least one of Arkadiusz Milik, Cedric Bakambu, Bamba Dieng, and Luis Suarez (not the one who recently returned to Uruguay) will have to leave to make place for the once-lethal South American.
