Alcohol scandal in Germany: Bayern Munich's city rivals drink 'rakia' in a dressing room ahead of the important league clash

Once, they were a proper Bundesliga side, but life in lower leagues is taking its toll. And players are behaving awkwardly

A curious incident occurred at the traditional German club 1860 Munich, a longstanding Bundesliga slot that has fallen down in recent years and is now in the third tier.

Three players are said to have been caught drinking alcohol in the dressing room before and between training sessions ahead of their league clash against Sarbrucken (Munich eventually lost 2-0).

Those players are said to have drunk 'rakia' (or 'schnapps' as the Germans call it) - a double-distilled fruit brandy with a very high percentage of alcohol (around 40%).

As Bild reports, the scandal included two regulars and one substitute player, with the newspaper not mentioning their names. All three were, apparently, sanctioned by the club.

After being relegated to the fourth-tier Regionalliga Bayern in 2017, 1860 returned to the 3rd division a year later. This season, the Munich team was considered the favourite for promotion and was at the summit in October.

The club now sits in a disappointing ninth place.
