The hosts will next face Mali on 26 December, while Comoros will look to bounce back against 2012 champions Zambia on 29 December.

Brahim Diaz announced himself on the Africa Cup of Nations stage in emphatic fashion, scoring the opening goal as hosts Morocco launched their AFCON Morocco 2025 campaign with a confident 2-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday in Rabat.

In front of a vibrant home crowd, Diaz was the heartbeat of Morocco’s attacking play, constantly demanding the ball and driving at the Comoros defence.

His breakthrough strike eased early pressure on the Atlas Lions and ignited celebrations inside the stadium and across the host nation as Morocco took control of their Group A opener. Diaz’s influential display earned him the Man of the Match award, capping a memorable night in Rabat.

Speaking after the match, the attacking midfielder expressed the pride and emotional connection he feels when representing Morocco.

“I feel at home. I feel really good and I know that the people love me,” Diaz said. “I want to give my best when representing Morocco because without them I would not be here and not be playing football. I am so happy to be here and to give everything for my country.”

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui, however, admitted the contest was far from straightforward despite the positive result. Reflecting on the game, he revealed his side struggled in the opening half.

“We have been preparing for this game for a year and a half, and that brought a lot of pressure,” Regragui told CAF Media. “We had a bad start, with the missed penalty and the injury to Romain Saïss.”

The Moroccan tactician explained that tactical adjustments at half-time proved decisive in breaking down Comoros’ organised defence.

“At half-time, I wasn’t very satisfied with the team. We spoke and put certain adjustments in place, which the players applied very quickly,” he said. “It wasn’t an easy match. Comoros defended very compactly, so we had to remain focused, adapt and take our chances when they came.”

The win places Morocco in a strong position early in Group A. The hosts will next face Mali on 26 December, while Comoros will look to bounce back against 2012 champions Zambia on 29 December.
