AFCON 2023: Nigeria and Angola prepare for quarterfinal showdown

In a press conference preceding the quarterfinal match between Nigeria and Angola in the AFCON 2023 tournament, Nigeria's coach, Jose Peseiro, has acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Angola.

“Both teams want to reach the semifinal and it will therefore be a very hard match. We need to fight and have good organization. Angola doesn’t have a big name in African football but they are a very good team and we expect tough competition from them.”

Peseiro addressed concerns about his team's defensive strategy and injury worries, stating, “We will need to defend well and attack from the onset. If we stick to our organizational plan I am confident and hopeful of getting the crucial win,” further adding, “We will do the final test to know if the goalkeeper will be available, I have confidence in all the keepers in the team so it is not a problem.”

Regarding Nigeria's status as favorites, Peseiro emphasized, “Our focus is just on winning the game against Angola. We are not thinking of the past successes and failures but the game tomorrow and ensuring everyone is ready to play.”

In contrast, Angola's coach, Pedro Goncalves, recognized Nigeria's dominance but expressed confidence in his team's capabilities, stating, “Nigeria is a giant and a favourite. They are a great but it is an opportunity to show what we are made of. We have reached this level deservedly; we have all been devoted and dedicated and it is a great opportunity for all of us that we didn’t get to here by sheer luck.”

Goncalves outlined his team's approach, saying, “We have shown our ability and the tactical flexibility so far and we are able to face any team structure. We will not focus on any single player but the opponents as a unit,” while also noting, “Nigeria have conceded just one goal, but we are one of the highest scoring teams in the AFCON so far. I admit they are very compact defensively and a threat offensively. We have our strong points as well and we know it is possible to score goals against the Super Eagles.”
