AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani heaped praise on youngster Emmanuel Lwangu, noting that he could be the answer to the team’s defensive shortcomings following his impressive display in their FKF Premier League match against Nairobi United.
The 22-year-old was handed a starting berth by the former Wazito FC tactician and partnered Kayci Odhiambo at centre-back for his first start of the season in a match played on Wednesday, 7 January, at Nyayo National Stadium.
While an own goal from Michael Karamor and a Kelly Madada strike proved decisive, Lwangu delivered a solid performance and helped his side keep a clean sheet, drawing plaudits from the club’s faithful, who sang his praises.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport after the match, Ambani joined the fans in lauding the former Shabana defender and explained his growing importance to the team.
“He (Lwangu) is a great player. The mentality is there, the physique is there, and you could see how aggressively he fought. He was very impressive against a strong side and helped the team, and I would like to appreciate him for that,” said Ambani.
“We have been having problems at centre-back, but he has proven that he could be the solution to those problems,” he added.
Apart from Lwangu,Madada, Ronald Sichenje, Victor Otieno and Samwel Ssenyonjo were also named in the starting eleven. All impressed and played key roles in securing maximum points.
“I am satisfied with the depth and the mentality the players currently have. We made changes, with some young players getting the nod to start, and they were able to match Nairobi United, who have been impressive in their recent matches,” remarked Ambani.
The win lifted Leopards back to the top of the league table with 27 points, one more than their arch-rivals Gor Mahia.
Ingwe will next face 12-time champions Tusker FC in a match scheduled for Sunday, 11 January, at Nyayo Stadium, starting at 4PM.
