A national coach without players and staff refuses to resign

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 27.08.23. | 17:03

Just 25 days before the next game, Vilda has no staff and not a single world winning player

Sometimes, only the big occasions show what kind of man somebody is. And in this case, Spain's female football team made a fantastic success by winning the World Cup, beating the current European champions, England. And then the ‘kissing incident’ happened, and two successful men up to that point, chief Luis Rubiales and coach Jorge Vilda, were on the headlines for days and still are. Rubiales famously refused to resign under pressure and even threatened legal action against Jenni Hermoso, whom he kissed on the lips at the podium, before he was suspended by FIFA. And then it was turn on Vilda, who is also refusing to resign, even though he is left without a complete coaching staff and all 23 girls from the World Cup team!

Even before this World Cup, Spain's coach was among the unpopular figures. According to various reports, he forced players to keep the doors of their rooms open so he could check they'd gone to sleep and also checked their bags when they came back from shopping. In 2022, 15 players wrote to the Spanish FA, making themselves unavailable for selection while Vilda was in charge. During the final, footage emerged showing Vilda appearing to grab a female staffer’s breast as the team celebrated Olga Carmona’s World Cup-winning goal in the first half. And now, after the Rubiales scandal, his entire coaching staff resigned, supporting Hermoso. Her teammates also did the same, and now, just 15 days before the call-up for the Nations League against Sweden (September 22nd), he will have to count on some other players. In total, there are 38 footballers, out of which 23 vowed never to play for Vilda again.

And yet he won’t resign.

"My work as Women's National Team Coach and Sports Director of the Women's Teams has always been oriented towards achieving sporting success, but also promoting initiatives that promote inclusion, respect and equity. The achievement of the Women's World Championship and the successes achieved in lower categories are a reflection of the work that has been done by the Federation that unquestionably supports women's sport" he said in a statement.
