Granada beats Barcelona and prevents Messi & Co in taking the summit of the La Liga table
What a comeback by the underdogs! Barcelona failed to use the opportunity to climb to the top of La Liga. In what was a delayed match of the 33rd round of La Liga, Barca were shockingly defeated by Granada at Camp Nou. Final score 1-2 in favour of the Andalusian team.
A sleepy start from Barcelona at their home turf. A lot of passing and waiting for Granada to open up their defensive pockets.
No chances created until the goal itself which happened in the 24th minute. A great through ball by Antoine Griezmann set up Lionel Messi inside the box, he made no mistake and banged the ball into the bottom right corner.
No player has been involved in more goals in the Top 5 European Leagues since the start of 2021 than Leo Messi (27 goals: 19 goals and 8 assists).
Messi could have scored his second and double the lead in the 36th minute as he caught a lofted pass into the box. Unfortunately for the Argentine, his shot went just wide of the left post.
Barca held the ball selfishly with Granada failing to surprise the hosts in any way.
A minute after the second half started Griezmann could have added a goal to his assist but his attempt went high and wide of Escandell's left post.
Barcelona wanted that second goal badly. Sergi Roberto tried in the 53rd minute as he caught a long ball into the box and unleashed a fine volley at goal, but the effort flashed just over the bar.
As Barca failed to convert chance after chance, Granada took advantage of that and leveled the score in the 63rd minute. Darwin Machis was on the other end of a perfect pass and fired an excellent low shot into the middle of the net. There was nothing Ter Stegen could have done about it.
After they were left without the lead, Barcelona were left without their manager in the 66th minute since Ronald Koeman got a direct red card.
A good side of fans being absent was the silence at the stadium so Koeman could have instructed his assistants by speaking with them on his mobile phone.
An expected pressure from Barca built up minute after minute.
Just after Pique missed a promising rebound of Leo Messi's free kick, Pique himself was the one to blame for Granada's second goal.
Out of nowhere, in the 79th minute, Adrian Marin sent a superb cross into the box where lonely Jorge Molina awaited. The 39-year-old planted a header from close range into the bottom right corner, leaving Marc-Andre ter Stegen beaten.
A huge hit for the Blaugrana. Following the lead Granada took, Barca tried with a siege of their opponents goal. However, attempts were futile - a lot of high crosses that mostly ended up in Escandell's arms. An estounding piece of information - this was the first win by Granada at Camp Nou ever.
With all three top team having 33 games played, now Atletico see themselves as leaders again with 73 points. El Clasico rivals have 71 point each.
