Former Manchester United boss could be joining seven-time European champions

Ruben Amorim's disastrous spell at Manchester United may not have damaged his reputation as much as many expected.

Just five months after being sacked by the Premier League giants, the Portuguese coach has emerged as the leading candidate to take over at AC Milan.

The 41-year-old, who has been out of work since his dismissal in January, held talks with the Serie A club in Portugal last week as the Rossoneri continue their search for a new head coach.

Milan are undergoing a major rebuild after missing out on Champions League qualification for a second consecutive season. Massimiliano Allegri was shown the door after just one year in charge, while several senior figures also departed as part of a wider restructuring effort.

Amorim's name has risen to the top of the shortlist despite a turbulent stint at Old Trafford. Hired in November 2024 as one of Europe's most sought-after coaches following his success with Sporting CP, he oversaw a dramatic decline at United, who slumped to a 15th-place finish - their worst Premier League campaign on record.

The Portuguese manager was eventually dismissed amid growing tensions behind the scenes and continued questions over his commitment to a 3-4-3 system that never truly took hold in Manchester.

Yet Milan appear willing to look beyond that failure. The Italian giants have explored a number of options, including Mauricio Pochettino, Oliver Glasner, Matthias Jaissle and Sebastian Hoeness, but Amorim is now considered the frontrunner to take over at San Siro.

For a coach whose stock appeared to be falling fast, another seat at European football's top table could already be waiting.
