2022 CECAFA Women: Uganda, Burundi on the verge of history

Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2022-bound duo of Uganda and Burundi will square it out in the final of the 2022 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru on Saturday starting at 3 PM EAT.

Crested Cranes edged out Ethiopia in the first semi in extra time by a solitary goal while Burundi saw off Tanzania 2-1 in the other semi.

Both teams will be seeking to win their first-ever title in the regional tournament on top of being the only ones in the region set to grace the continental showpiece in Morocco next month.

The fact that the two sides met in the group stages is a concern for Crested Cranes' coach George William Lutalo who says that it will be a tough match because of that but exudes confidence in his team's preparedness.

“Our preparations have been good and we are very ready for the final which will be very entertaining. Burundi is a strong team and they will not be easy since we already faced them and won 4-1 in the group stage,” Lutalo said.

Burundi's assistant coach Belyse Ininahazwe remains hopeful of lifting the trophy on Saturday, and while at it insists that they will be out to play a good game as well.

“We are very happy to get to the final. We are determined to carry the Burundi flag high by playing a good game as we aim to win the trophy,” Ininahazwe said.

Before the final, Tanzania who were favorites in the tournament but were shockingly eliminated by Burundi, will take on Ethiopia in a play-off to decide who settles for bronze at noon.
