World Athletics Indoor Championships silver medalist Noah Kibet is through to the men's 800m semifinals after winning his heat at the ongoing junior championship in Cali Colombia.

Kibet, fresh from competing in the World Championships in Oregon where he tapped out in the semis will be joined by the Kenyan trials winner Daniel Kiptoo Barngetuny who finished second in his great to book an automatic qualification slot to the semis.

Running in heat two, Kibet was by far the athlete to beat as he went in with a superior personal best time of 1:44.88 and a season best of 1:44.89 against a field that had no other sub 1.46 runner.

He was, however, made to work for his place, kicking in the home straight to zoom past Australian Charlie Jefferson for 1:51.37 as second place took 1:51.69. American Miles Brown won the other automatic slot from the heat.

On his part, Kiptoo who talked highly of Kibet during the national trials clocked 1:50.96for second place in a much faster heat than Kibet's. He finished behind Algerian Heithem Chenitef

The duo take to the track again on Friday night 23:50pm (EAT) for the semi final as they look to book a place in the final and defend the title won by compatriot Emmanuel Wanyonyi last year.

Kibet will be keen to upgrade his 2021 bronze while Kiptoo is chasing a first of many likely medals.
