World Relay prize purse motivation for Kenyan team in Silesia

Kenya will be represented in seven events: the men's and women's 4x400m, 4x400m mixed relay, shuttle relay, men's and women's 4x200m and 2x2x400m
In addition to Olympics and World Athletics slots up for grabs at the fifth edition of the World Relays happening this weekend on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2 in Chorzow's Silesian Stadium, athletes will be looking to get their hands on the deep pockets of the world body World Athletics (WA).

Kenyan athletes taking part in the shuttle relay are already assured of a medal, baring a disqualification, and for their efforts, the athletes stand to win at least Shs 539,000( USD5000) the prize money for a third place finish. A second place finish would see the Kenyans walk home with at least Shs 1.2 million ( USD 12,000) while a win guarantees the team at least Sh 2.5 million (USD 24,000).
Priscilla Tabunda, Vanice Kerubo, Rukia Nusra, Wiseman Were, Michael Musyoka and Kipkorir Rotich are the six looking to make the starting line up for the final set for Saturday at 9.58 pm.

Additionally, Kenya has a solid record in men’s 4x200m race at the World Relays, having placed fourth in 2019 and fifth in 2014. As per the WA prize money breakdown, another fourth-place finish guarantees the team atleast Sh 430,000 (USD 4,000) with a podium finish handing the between half a million and two and a half million depending on the placing on the podium.

About 650 athletes from more than 30 teams are expected to take part, competing in nine relay disciplines. The first eight teams in the 4x100m, 4x400m and mixed 4x400m shall automatically qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. If the country already qualified through the World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, the remaining places will be allocated according to the World Athletics top performance lists of 29 June 2021.
The first 10 teams in the 4x100m and 4x400m and first 12 teams in the mixed 4x400m automatically qualify for the World Athletics Championships Oregon 22.
Prize money is awarded as follows:
4x100m and 4x400m finals1st US$40,000, 2nd US$20,000, 3rd US$10,000, 4th US$8000, 5th US$6000, 6th US$4000, 7th US$3000, 8th US$2000
4x200m finals1st US$24,000, 2nd US$12,000, 3rd US$5000, 4th US$4000, 5th US$3000, 6th US$2000
Mixed 2x2x400m final1st US$12,000, 2nd US$6,000, 3rd US$2500, 4th US$2000, 5th US$1500, 6th US$1000
Mixed shuttle hurdles final1st US$24,000, 2nd US$12,000, 3rd US$5000, 4th US$4000
