While the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, there was early speculation that the blaze may have been triggered by the sudden return of electricity to the building

Usain Bolt’s ongoing efforts to support Hurricane Melissa victims have been dealt a heavy blow after a massive fire tore through his popular Montego Bay Restaurant, Tracks & Records, late Saturday night.

The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Sunday, severely damaged the iconic dining spot located along the bustling Hip Strip in St James.

Since opening its doors in 2018, Tracks & Records has grown into a major attraction for locals and tourists, celebrated for its Caribbean cuisine, sports-themed ambience, and strong ties to the Olympic legend.

The timing could not have been more devastating. The restaurant had been playing a key role in hurricane recovery, partnering with World Central Kitchen to prepare and distribute daily meals to communities affected by Hurricane Melissa.

With the main power still down in the aftermath of the storm, the restaurant had been operating on generator power and had not reopened to the public.

According to reports, members of the meal preparation team arrived at approximately 1:45 am and discovered flames coming from the building.

They immediately alerted the Jamaica Fire Brigade, who rushed to the scene.

However, by the time firefighters arrived, the upper floor was already engulfed.

Acting Superintendent Oneil Kerr, the Jamaica Fire Brigade’s lead investigator for St James, said crews swiftly moved into action.

Upon arrival, the team observed fire coming from the roof of Tracks & Records,” Kerr said. “They immediately got into operation, and within a few minutes the situation was brought under control.

Despite their quick response, the damage remains extensive.

The fire was confined to the upper floors, which holds the dining area, bar, restrooms, and an office space. But as it relates to getting the property owners to do their evaluation of the items they had stored, that will determine the full cost. Based on observation, the extent appears to be significant,” Kerr added.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

Officials spent much of the morning combing through debris and gathering statements from staff as investigations continue.

While the cause of the fire has not been confirmed, there was early speculation that the blaze may have been triggered by the sudden return of electricity to the building.

The loss of Tracks & Records is not only a setback for Montego Bay’s hospitality scene but also a disruption to the crucial relief services the restaurant had been providing in partnership with World Central Kitchen.

For many affected by Hurricane Melissa, the meals coming out of Bolt’s establishment were a much-needed lifeline.
