The finish marked a nail-biting moment as the Ugandan runner nearly broke the 2:00:35 record set in Chicago in 2023 by late Kenyan racing star Kelvin Kiptum, who cemented his legacy in the running world with a record-breaking finish at the Chicago Marathon, becoming the first runner to finish the race in under 2:01.

Kiplimo was on World Record pace for the better part of the race, going through 35km in 1:39:53, with a projected finish time of 2:00:30.

He, however, slowed down significantly in the ensuing kilometres, slowing down the pace to go through 37km in 2:00:47 pace.

Kiplimo had only ever run one other marathon, finishing second in the London Marathon, just 10 seconds behind winner Sebastian Sawe and set the Ugandan national record.

He had just shattered the half marathon world record just two months earlier, when he ran 56:42.

Kiplimo crossed the finish line one minute and 31 seconds ahead of Amos Kipruto who led a Kenya. 2-3 finish with Alex Masai settling for bronze in 2:04:37.

Kiplimo has established a six-second gap to reigning champion Korir at 30km, going through 1:25:31 for a projected 2:00:13 finish. He, however, slowed down significantly in the ensuing minutes, going on to finish a minute and 31 seconds ahead of Kenya's Kipruto.

Masai, the younger brother to Moses and Linet Masai managed a new personal best.

Conner Mantz finished fourth with the fastest time ever run by an American. Mantz clocked an unofficial 2:04:43, breaking the American record in the marathon of 2:05:38 set by Khalid Khannouchi at the 2002 London Marathon, which was the world record at the time.
