The county is eager to finish the Chagaiya High Altitude Training Centre
Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Chelilim Bii has announced that the devolved unit is fast-tracking the completion of the Chagaiya High Altitude Training Centre as a breeding ground for talent. The county is already rolling out several programs to grow sports talent – one of the pillars in Governor Bii’s 10-point agenda.
Speaking during the launch of the second edition of the Eldoret City Volleyball that was held at the county headquarters on Friday, the governor pointed out that he will ensure the facility's completion within the current financial year that ends on June 30, 2024.
The Chagaiya High Altitude Training camp is located in the Tarakwa area of Uasin Gishu County. The project which was started in 2016 is still far from completion despite allegedly gobbling more than Ksh24 million by March 2023, according to the Auditor General.
"In addition to the upcoming Eldoret City Volleyball tournament, my administration is steadfast in ensuring the completion of the Chagaiya High Altitude Training Camp within this financial year," he started.
The governor further revealed that the unveiling ceremony of the new facility would be marked by a 10km road race. He urged the athletes to compete for the hefty prize money.
"To test the capability of this state-of-the-art facility, we will organize a 10km road race to nurture our upcoming athletes. Our athletes can look forward to the prize money," Governor Bii said.
He also assured that his administration will oversee the construction of a multi-purpose indoor arena to cushion sports like volleyball and basketball.
"Furthermore, in our efforts to foster sports activities, my administration will oversee the construction of a multi-purpose hall to enable the participants to engage in indoor games like volleyball. The upcoming Governors Cup will showcase football as the main sport," he offered.
At the same time, the county is set to sponsor 60 teams that will compete at the second edition of the Eldoret City Volleyball slated for the Eldoret National Polytechnic from November 2-3.
The county's volleyball team which emerged winners in the 9th edition of the Kenya Inter County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games held in Meru in August will also grace the competition.
