Tola says he is chasing a sub-2:03 marathon, which would be a massive personal best (PB) for the runner whose current best mark was achieved in this same race in 2021.
“I am very happy to be back to compete at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon this year. I won in 2021 with 2:03.39, which is still my personal best.
Since then, I have won the World Championships in 2022, the New York City Marathon in 2023, and the Olympic Games in 2024.
Now I am coming back to Amsterdam to aim for a sub-2:03 and to win again, especially in this special 50th anniversary edition," Tola says.
His time from 2021 remains as the course record. It also saw the Ethiopian bring to an end a nine-title streak for Kenyan runners stretching from 2011 when Wilson Chebet dethroned Getu Feleke.
Race Director René Wit shared his excitement: “We are incredibly proud that an athlete of this calibre has once again chosen our marathon. His international breakthrough began here with his victory in Amsterdam in 2021.
The fact that he is returning now, after all his remarkable achievements in recent years, makes his participation even more special.”
