World Half Marathon silver medalist Daniel Ebenyo Simiu has expressed satisfaction with his performance during the 2024 Berlin Half Marathon where he emerged the champion.
The 2024 Sirikwa World Cross Country Tour Gold medalist led from gun to tape, crossing the line in 59:30, seconds ahead of his competitors Amos Kurgat (59:42) and Kipkoech Lasoi (59:47).
The Iten-based runner was coming off a nagging injury, which seemed to recur during the last kilometres of the race as he was visibly in pain as he made it to the finish line for the victory.
He noted that he was expecting a faster time in the race.
“After suffering from a knee injury am happy to do it again. I was expecting a faster time but am happy with what I have recorded today. Every race is a learning experience, and today was no different. I'm proud of what I achieved personally,” he started.
Despite missing the race record, Simiu was glad for what he achieved.
The Berlin half marathon course record of 58:12 was set by Eric Kiptanui in 2018.
“The record was on my mind, but it's all about the win today. I look forward to breaking more barriers in the future. Thanks again my followers for believing and trusting In me I'm humbled,” he concluded.
Simiu started the year on a high winning the Campaccio International Cross-Country race held in San Giorgio Legnano, Italy on January 6 by clocking 26:19.
He won his maiden National Police Cross Country Championships on January 19 after finishing in 29:48:49.
It was during that race that he ran the last 300m bare-chested after removing his jersey and waving it all the way.
During the Sirikwa Classic, Simiu was in a class of his own.
Despite starting slowly, he finished impressively, shining in 29:16, narrowly ahead of Ismael Kirui, who completed the race in 29:18, while Weldon Lagat completed the podium in 29:26.
It was after that classic debut that he made a statement ‘he is ready for the world,’ which was evident in Germany.
